Petrus is the Latin name for Peter. “Tu es Petrus... et super hanc petram aedificabo Ecclesiam meam” — “You are Peter, and on this rock I will build my Church” — are the words behind this group's name, and rehearsals happen, fittingly, at the Church of St. Peter and St. John in Estoril. VoxPetrus exists for the moments when music stops being a performance and becomes a service: masses, weddings, baptisms, memorials and other celebrations that call for a different relationship with music. It's not just about performing repertoire, but understanding the meaning of each moment and putting music at the service of the people living it. The ensemble works with liturgical repertoire from different periods, with music by composers such as Manuel Luís and António Cartageno featuring prominently, adapting its formation and programme to each celebration. When music meets ritual, a voice can become memory.
